Despite what some may have you believe, women have been in video games from the start, and while not always the main stars, they have always left an impression on gamers. In fact, there have been so many famous ladies in gaming, that this list has caused quite a free-for-all here behind the scenes. So get out your flame shield while we cover the ground rules.
First off, we’re starting with the third generation and only counting home consoles, because that’s when characters became less abstract, allowing them to be more recognizable on their own, and gaming came back to life after the great video game crash of 1983. This is important, because iconic is a balancing act between fame, recognition, and excellence. Some characters may be from games that sold far better, and were of higher quality, but you wouldn’t be able to pick them out from a crowd, often by design, so they didn’t make the list. Furthermore, there can only be one most iconic female character per generation, and that character can only make the list once.

Nintendo has been killing it with their new characters and designs since the start of the Nintendo Switch Era. Their designs have always been consistently good, but in the past four months they’ve introduced no less than 15 characters that have gone over extremely well, with Minmin, Twintelle, and now Marina going viral. Nier: Automata saved the Nier franchise from obscurity, introduced the greater gaming community to Yoko Taro, and bailed Platinum Games out of a tight spot. Some say this is due to Yoko Taro’s storytelling, which is on a different level than we’re used to in video games, while others say it was Platinum’s amazingly implemented gameplay and Teflon slick UI that turned an obscure niche title into a million plus seller. However, Taro’s stories never saved any of his previous games from obscurity, and Platinum’s masterful game design had yet to deliver them a mega-hit, so I must attribute this newfound success to Yoko Taro’s genius move to focus on creating a virally appealing character. Yoko Taro has a well earned cult following. While the quality of gameplay for the Drakengard and Nier games of the past could be described as mediocre at very best, the quality of his stories is beyond reproach. That’s why Nier: Automata’s pairing of Yoko Taro, genius story writer and director, and Platinum Games, the king of action games, is so beautiful. An interesting phenomenon occurs when a game, or any form of media really, is awarded a 10/10 score. There’s always a contingent of people that go beyond typical dissenters, haters if you would, ready to spitefully bash any game awarded said 10/10, possibly because they see it as an act of rebellion that will make them cooler in the eyes of their peers, or for some other deeply rooted psychological reason. The first four months of 2017 have been one continuous beating to gamers’ wallets. Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0, Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nier: Automata, Persona 5, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are roughly half a grand worth of video games I’d consider must play titles. While this has been the start of gaming’s new 1998, widely regarded as the best year in gaming history, it’s easy for deserving games to fall between the cracks.
