The Catch-22 of Souls games’ stories and why they must remain the same

I love Souls games. Admittedly, I got on the train a little late: I’ve never played Demon’s Souls and I have Dark Souls II and III queued up, ready to go. When Dark Souls was released for PC, I gave it a try, finding it horribly unwieldy with PC controls, and giving up after being killed by skeletons at the first bonfire five or six times, but once I used a controller, things got better. I also absolutely adore Bloodborne.

Examining E3 2017 conferences based on release dates for every game shown

E3 is the gamer version of Super Bowl commercials, except better, because the products are what the audience actually wants to see.  It’s a time for reveals and surprises, like a summer Xmas, but developers have recently gotten a little too excited when it comes to revealing games still in the early stages of production. There are two ways Publishers can approach E3: Take Path A and show what they’re planning, or take Path B and show what they’re releasing. It’s good that Nintendo doesn’t want to make political statements

I’ve tried very hard to remove politics from CSG, as I want to cover games. They’re the world’s greatest entertainment medium, and our favorite form of escapism from our less-than-perfect, or monotonous lives. Nintendo has the right of it: In a recent interview Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-aime said that “Making political statements are for other people to do. We want people to smile and have fun when they play our games.” Continue reading It’s good that Nintendo doesn’t want to make political statements

E3 2017 Impressions: Sony is now holding back the gaming industry

Every single time a console holder becomes the top dog, they also become disdainful of their fans. They lean on their past and current success, then try to maximize profits by utilizing unsustainable business practices, instead of pleasing gamers and third parties. This is why Nintendo had such a terrible reputation for decades. It’s why Sony’s expectation of PS3 dominance got BTFO by XB360 and Wii. It’s why the Wii U failed so miserably. It’s why the XBOX will possibly be Microsoft’s last console. It’s as inevitable as the tides: When a company becomes too successful, it stops playing by the rules of good sense and gets smacked down. E3 2017 Impressions: Nintendo brings the games

Nintendo brought a slew of fan favorites to the table this E3, with some exciting new installments for series such as Metroid Prime, Pokemon, Yoshi, Kirby, and of course Super Mario Odyssey, which is slated for release October 27, 2017. While some announcements, like Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4, were light on actual content, the mere mention of those particular titles was enough to get people talking, pushing sales, and making Nintendo’s newest console even harder to find. E3 2017 Impressions: Ubisoft

Ubisoft had a fair spread at E3 this year. It wasn’t quite the maelstrom of new games Xbox pulled out of the bag alongside their new console, nor was it the relative disappointment of Bethesdaland. Without any further ado, let’s go through the titles they discussed.

E3 Impressions: Sony Media Showcase

After Sony started their conference by showing two commercials and then letting Shawn Layden do his dragging speech — they could only go up from there. And they did. Sony impressed during their conference. While Xbox went the route of showing basically every game you’ll be able to play over the next year or two, Sony took the traditional path and showed their top games. E3 2017 Impressions: Bethesdaland

Bethesda brought out the B Team for E3 this year. The good: Bethesda has a wide and expansive library to still make an interesting conference. The bad: No new Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Sort of. Continue reading E3 2017 Impressions: Bethesdaland

E3 2017 Impressions: Microsoft Press Conference

For the last few years, Microsoft has been struggling to recover from the let down that was the Xbox One launch. Phil Spencer’s team has been working hard to repair the brand’s image in the eyes of fans. The Xbox team brought us a game-heavy conference, a promised commitment to giving gamers the best experience from their Xbox One, and the new most powerful console on the market While not quite perfect, Microsoft came out swinging. E3 2017 Impressions: EA Play

EA is trying. Which is more that can be said of them in recent years. It was interesting to see them double down on sports games reveals this year, whether that’s because they want to push the games or they lack more content beyond their usual yearly games is up for interpretation (I think it’s the latter).
